Meet the Product Models: Ace

Meet Ace!

Grchsd A&M Recovery Kickin' Aces is a 3-year-old purebred yellow labrador retriever. All those letters in front of his name stand for Grand Champion Shed Dog.

Ace is one of the models for our Fall 2023 product launch, and we had the pleasure of speaking with one of his owners, Jason Wagner, to learn more about what Ace gets up to when he isn't being a superb model!

Before Ace came into Jason's life, Jason got a dog named Boone. He liked watching Lee and Tiffany Lakosky on Crush with their shed hunting dogs, and thought it would be really cool to have a dog of his own to go shed-hunting with. So Boone came into Jason's life, and he sent Boone to waterfowl school.

Jason soon heard online about a good shed-hunting training school, A&M Recovery Kennels, and decided to take Boone there to train. There, Jason met someone who soon became his friend   Andrew. Andrew is a dog breeder, and once said "You know what's better than one shed dog? Two!" His dog was having a litter soon and he offered to co-own one of the puppies with Jason. And that dog is Ace!

Shed hunting, for those who may not know, is a sport where humans train dogs to find the shed horns of deer, elk, moose, and caribou. The dogs rely on their keen sense of smell, as sheds have a unique scent. Skilled dogs can find and smell them from 50-60 yards away.

Ace took to learning shed hunting very quickly and loves to do it!

Full of energy!

Ace does contests with the UKC. He participates in the elite shed dog series. He's gone all over the Midwest to compete! Last year he started working towards getting the elite title, which means he's got to win three contests. The titles are based on a point system   the better you do, the more points you get.

Good job, Ace!

Ace's mom, Legacy, was a grand champion shed dog, and also did blood recovery. Blood recovery is when a hunter injures a deer, and then brings a dog out, and dog trails the injured deer to find it for the hunters. Ace definitely comes from a lineage of skilled hunting dogs.

Talented dogs!

Jason says that Ace is unbelievably smart. His energy is wild and immeasurable when he's finding or looking for sheds, throwing, or retrieving. As soon as Ace gets in the house, though, he immediately goes to his bed and lays there   "like an on and off switch." Ace started getting into hunting waterfowl last year, and he picked up on it just as quickly as he took to shed hunting!

A perfect team.

Ace lives with three human kids, and they have all run him in youth contests. Every time Jason's son Caleb runs Ace, he runs Ace faster than his dad! Boone, mentioned earlier, is Ace's best friend. They shed hunt and work very well together. Both of them love the human kids in their lives and are great family dogs.

Ace loves working with humans of all ages.

Ace loves retrieving. If he could, he would do it all day. A tennis ball, a deer horn, anything he thinks his human would throw for him, he'll find and bring in hopes of being able to retrieve. His perfect day would look like going and finding some sheds in the morning, and in the evening going swimming to retrieve dummies that his human throws in the water.

Ace just keeps on winning!

In a special full-circle moment, Jason got to take both his dogs with his father and shed hunt on Lee and Tiffany Lakosky's land   the very same people who inspired him to get into shed hunting in the first place.

Dream come true!

Jason said shed hunting with his dogs has been a wonderful experience like no other. He told a story about how he was out with the dogs on a walk when his phone rang. He picked it up, talked for a little while, and out of the blue one of the dogs came trotting up with a gigantic horn in their mouth!

Now, Ace has added "model" to his list of skills! We think he looks great, and can't wait to hear what Ace and Boone get up to next!
